Heavily damaged by Hurricane Hugo, Charleston County elected to pursue a restoration of the building exterior and a period reconstruction of the building's interior, which had been previously gutted seven times. Little historic fabric remained on the interior, so the interior was reconstructed based on historic documentation and period detailing.
